Starting therapy: what to expect

Booking a first session can feel like a big step, mostly because the unknown is uncomfortable. Here’s the honest, plain-language version of what usually happens.

The first conversation

Your first session is mostly about getting to know each other. There’s no test and no right answers — just a chance to say, in your own words, what’s been going on.

If it’s not the right fit, that’s okay too. A good therapist will happily help you find someone who suits you better.

Before your first session

You don’t need to prepare a speech or have your problems neatly summarised. It’s completely fine to arrive and say, “I’m not even sure where to start.” A good therapist will help you find the thread.

It can help to think loosely about what brought you here and what you’d like to feel differently — but hold it lightly. The conversation will go where it needs to.

What therapy is (and isn’t)

Therapy isn’t advice, and it isn’t someone telling you what to do. It’s a private, judgement-free space to understand yourself better, with someone trained to help you make sense of what you find.

Some sessions feel like a relief. Others feel like hard work. Both are normal, and both are part of it.

How long it takes

There’s no fixed timeline. Some people come for a handful of sessions to work through something specific; others value a longer, ongoing space. You set the pace, and you can pause or stop whenever it feels right.

You don’t have to make sense of it alone.
